David's life as a renegade

The personal conflict between King Saul and his protégé, David, is the topic of several chapters in the Book of Samuel. The function of those narratives is as royal propaganda for the Davidic dynasty, justifying its attainment of power over a united Israel. Every effort is made to show that David was neither a usurper nor a traitor. The ensuing discussion deals with the geographical information that can be gleaned from the fugitive adventures of David. Most of it comes from rural and pastoral areas that might otherwise not play a role in royal narration.
