Pilgrimages to the Temple in Jerusalem on the three pilgrimage festivals and during the rest of the year express the centrality of the city in the Second Temple period. The halakha determined that the meal offerings, priestly tithes, and the sacrifices were to be from the finest agricultural produce brought from every place in the land where Jews lived. The sources list the settlements where the produce was the choicest and fit to be brought to the Temple (tractate Minhot 88, 1).
