Conquest of the southern Shephelah and central Hill Country Century BCEIt is interesting to note that there are no conquest stories about places in the northern district of the Shephelah in Joshua 15:33–36. Apparently, the relationship between the Israelites and the Canaanite/Amorite dwellers in that district is reflected accurately in the story of Judah and Tamar (Gen 38). Later, in Joshua 10:21, Joshua had a camp at Makkedah (=Khirbet el-Qôm) on the eastern edge of the trough valley, at the foot of the Hebron hills. It becomes the first in a cycle of conquests in the central and southern districts of the Shephelah (see Josh 10:28).
